Dr Pablo Lavados is a clinical neurologist specialising in vascular neurology, neurosonology, and clinical epidemiology. He is affiliated with the Vascular Neurology Unit within the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry at Clínica Alemana in Santiago. Additionally, he serves as the head of the research and clinical trials unit at Clínica Alemana in Santiago. Dr Lavados holds the position of Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Chile and Professor of Neurology at the University of Desarrollo, both located in Santiago.
He earned his medical degree and completed his postgraduate training in neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile. Subsequently, Dr Lavados obtained a Master's degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He completed a clinical research fellowship at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, as well as a postdoctoral fellowship as a fellow in cerebrovascular diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lavados served as the principal investigator of the PISCIS Project, an epidemiological study of cerebrovascular diseases conducted in northern Chile. He also led several international academic clinical trials in Chile, including ICSVT, MASH II, INTERACT2, ENCHANTED, and HEADPOST, the latter three organized by the George Institute for Global Health in Australia. Additionally, he was involved in the OPTIC registry and the ÑANDU project for cerebrovascular disease surveillance in southern Chile. He has also been the principal investigator or national leader in various stroke prevention clinical trials, including CHARISMA, SAINT II, PERFORM, SOCRATES, and AXIOMATIC SSP. Currently, he is a co-investigator in the ADDSPISE clinical trial and the RECCA cerebrovascular disease registry at Clínica Alemana, as well as the national leader of the LIBREXIA SSP clinical trial.
Dr. Lavados has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Scholarship, an OPS scholarship, and a Fulbright scholarship, among others. He also serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Health on the national stroke program in Chile and has been involved in the development of clinical guidelines for the management of acute ischemic stroke and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as strategies to achieve health objectives for the years 2010-2020 and 2021-2030.
In his research, Dr. Lavados has primarily focused on neuroepidemiology, clinical trials, and diagnostic methods, with most of his publications centered on cerebrovascular diseases. He has authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, The Lancet Neurology, Neurology, Stroke, International Journal of Stroke, and Cerebrovascular Diseases, among others. Dr. Lavados has delivered lectures in Chile, South America, Europe, and the United States on various topics, including stroke epidemiology in Latin America, quality control in stroke care, antiplatelet use in stroke, acute stroke management, intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke, secondary and primary prevention, stroke research, and other related subjects.
